We all raided the refrigerator when growing up. While hunting for the best meal available, we looked to and fro. One thing you probably noticed was the presence of baking soda, often in that little orange box. So, just what is the deal with baking soda and refrigerators?
Give me convenience or give me death! This seems to be the theme in our modern world. The truth of the matter, however, is such convenience is often unneeded. I was watching television the other night and saw a commercial on some amazing product that would eliminate smells in my refrigerator and freezer. I laughed. Why? There is absolutely no reason to spend big bucks on such a product because this is exactly what baking soda does.
Your refrigerator is obviously full of foods, drinks and condiments. Each has their own smell. Mixed together, they can be pretty rank. Long ago, someone discovered that a box of baking soda would suck up those odors. A kitchen tradition was born and baking soda companies had a huge, unintended hit on their hands.
So, how do you use baking soda to eliminate odors? It is very simple. Buy a small box. Take it home. Open it. Stick it in the refrigerator or freezer. Replace it every three months or earlier if odors start to occur. Yes, it is really that easy and you certainly don't need to pay for any magic new product being offered in infomercials on television!
Like an infomercial, however, it just gets better. Yes, baking soda is also a cleaner. Pour some into a little bowl, add water and mix until you have a paste. Now apply it to any stains or rust spots in your refrigerator. Scrub with a sponge and'walla! The spots and rust should be gone.
Baking soda is a rather amazing substance. For less than $10, you can get three months of odor killer and cleaning in your frig.
